Books I picked up in June and quick thoughts
I would like to note that I don’t really “rate” books, but I did on here for various reasons. Just ignore! I really struggle with rating and have a lot of differing opinions on it, so sometimes I go through random bouts of rating books. It’s really more for me to know if I enjoyed it or not…every book is different for everyone.
The one I DNF:
I Wish I Didn’t Have to Tell You This: A Graphic Memoir by Eugene Yelchin- honestly I only downloaded it so I could meet my reading goal this month with a graphic novel and I just didn’t feel it. Probably because it is actually the second book, so I may need to find the first one.
The ones I paused:
Daggermouth by HM Wolfe- I heard so many things about this book and when I also got Kindle Unlimited for free for 3 months, I thought I would try it out. I honestly had trouble connecting with the characters and believing the story, so I decided to put it on “pause” and decide later if I want to continue.
Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman-only paused because my audiobook went back to the library and I had just started getting into it. I like murder mysteries, but sometimes have a hard time getting into them or picking them up. I want to read this, but just have been getting a few pages in at a time between library availability and what not.

And now on to my quick reviews of the books I did finish!
Books I Finished (with quick thoughts)
The Night We Met by Abby Jimenez: Not one of my favorites by her, but still so good. She does a great job at romance with strong emotions and connections.
Vigil by George Saunders: Probably a read that is best reread to really understand. I do enjoy Saunders style, it is so different.
Of Mountains and Sea by Emily Renk Hawthorne: An ARC that I really liked! It had a great mix of different timelines, povs, and fascinating fantasy.
Problematic Summer Romance by Ali Hazelwood: Quite spicy and…problematic. But also entertaining.
Eva to the Max by Rebecca Caprera: Loved. Novel in verse. Motocross. Female. Caprera is one of my favs.
The Astral Library by Kate Quinn: A great book for book lovers! Wouldn’t you love to visit your favorite story?
The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo: Took me awhile, and I read at night, so I wasn’t at my best. BUT, I did really like the world and the plot.
Fablehaven, book one by Brandon Mull: I read this for my podcast and interviewed the author. You can listen here. I can see why it is a fantasy for kids that will be around for a long time.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by JK Rowling: I have been annotating a copy of HP for my daughter for her birthday since she turned 11. Although I don’t agree with JK Rowling and really don’t like her problematic statements, I do enjoy sharing this world with my daughter and sharing my thoughts as it was my favorite book growing up.
The Naturals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes: I really liked this first book in this series. I immediately looked for the next book. It’s not my usual read, but the characters are really interesting and they mystery has me hooked.
Run: Book One by John Lewis: This wasn’t as good as the March books, but is an important one to gain insight into what John Lewis fought for.
The Gate of the Feral Gods by Matt Dinniman: I am officially obsessed with Dungeon Crawler Carl and I would say this book really solidified my obsession.
The Unselected Journals of Emma M Lion, Volume 1 by Beth Brower: New obsession. I would describe these books as my catnip. This series is just chefs kiss and it’s hard to describe why. Jane Austen, sarcasm, banter, independence, feminism, humor…
Just Between Us by Adeline Kon: I was in the mood for a good graphic novel and I enjoyed this one about two “enemy” ice skaters.
Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke: Of course I read the most “divisive book” of the year! So many feelings…I did like the portrayal of social media and our relationship with influencers and their followers, as well as the power of social media on our minds. If you liked Yellowface or Julie Chan is Dead, I think you’ll like this one.
It took me a month to write this post…but I hope to share my July reads in a more timely manner.
