It's Monday! What Are You Reading?
I have had a WONDERFUL week of reading!
A Wolf Called Wander by Rosanne Parry: (MG)I read this with my daughter and it was such a great one to read together. We both got very emotional, but had some great conversations.
Pet by Akwaeke Emezi : (Upper MG) I listened to the audiobook and the narrator was so wonderful. I could have listened all day. And this story? Absolutely stunning and important.
Land of Broken Promises by Jane Kuo: (MG) This was a sequel that I didn't know I needed. Kuo's first book, In the Beautiful Country, was one of my favorite reads last year and this one will definitely be up there for this year. I love reading Kuo's memoir of her life coming to America in the 1980s and her family working to get settled. It's raw and the poetry is stunning.
Finding Langston by Lisa Cline-Ransom: (MG)This was also listened to as an audiobook and AGAIN loved the narrator! I even slowed the speed down (I usually listen on 1.5) so I could really experience the voice. This was a beautiful book of finding your place in a new world. Langston (named after Langston Hughes) recently moved from Alabama to Chicago after his mother died. He runs into a lot of trouble with some boys at school, but what he finds in his escape-the library-is truly wonderful.
Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels by India Holton: THIS BOOK IS AMAZING. It's adult by the way. But man, the banter, the humor, the PIRATES, and ASSASSINS, the MAGIC! I cannot stop raving about this book. I fell in love so fast!
Women Talking by Miriam Toews: Another adult read-this one for my book club. This was an interestingly written story. It reads like an interview, so feels nonfiction, but it is fiction-BUT it is based on real events. This story follows a group of Mennonite women who have faced some truly traumatic abuse at the hands of the men of their group as they work through whether to leave their community or not. I think Toews did a fantastic job at showing how real and tough these conversations had to have been. It's not my favorite in terms of engagement (I found myself bored at times and skimming) but I am glad I read it.
