First Week of School Joys
Summer has ended, but I am still finding joy in the everyday
Last week brought kids back into the school building and even though I ended the week barely able to stand, it was a great first week.
Here are some highlights of my week:
Book Joys
Reading was tough this week as I kept falling asleep after reading about 5 minutes, but I did get some good books in!
Audition by Katie Kitamura (audiobook): I heard about this book on the Reading Glasses podcast and it was very different from what I normally read, but in a good way. It was written from the MCs point of view, kind of stream of conscious-like, and you really don’t trust what is being told to you. I like an unreliable narrator! I am not completely sure I understood everything that was going on…I was multitasking a lot while reading. But, overall I am glad I picked it up!
Fairy Tale by Stephen King (ebook): This was my first book on my wheel to go through my books I own. (read this if you want to know more) I read the first 50 pages through a sample on my Kindle and I did enjoy it, so I will be keeping it on my shelf. I also loved the feel of the paperback I own (which is probably part of why I bought it) and I love the cover. It is so intriguing. The book is slow, as most of Stephen King’s are, and I had to read the synopsis to help me decide if it’s something for me. I think it is though!
Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross (ebook): This was a reread to get to Ruthless Vows and I am so glad I reread it! There was a lot I had forgotten and I remember why I loved it. Ross has a great writing style and I had so many things highlighted.
Ruthless Vows by Rebecca Ross (ebook): The sequel is taking a turn that I think I will like! It’s kind of a flip of the first book, but I don’t want to say too much more about how I mean that. I like it when sequels mirror each other and this one is doing that! I am reading it on my kindle at night…so it’s slow going though.
Bye Forever, I Guess by Jodi Meadows (audiobook): I have been WAITING FOREVER for this book through Libby. One of my good friends was raving about this book and I immediately put it on hold. I feel like that was months ago, but it finally came! So far, it’s cute and fun, with heart. Which is all the good things I love about middle grade.
I Was a Teenage Slasher by Stephen Graham Jones (audiobook and physical): I am still really loving horror right now and I love the 80s slasher vibes of this one (obviously). It’s definitely not what I expected though in terms of plot (I will admit I did not read the synopsis though) and I really like where it’s going.
This might seem like a weird poll question, but I have found that I really do not like reading what a book is about before diving in. I like to take what someone else describes or what I gather from the cover. I don’t want too much information.
Other Joys
Three students brought me gifts on the first day: a crochet strawberry, a crochet flower (this one made by the student), and a journal (hand-sewn by the student).
Met a lot of really cool kids.
One student is already making bracelets to sell for our student store.
I made it to work early every day.
Binge-watched Young Sheldon every night with my daughter.
Worked out every morning before work.
Finished a crochet project-a water bottle holder.
Somewhat journaled regularly.
Colored in my coloring book two nights.
Made 3d printed tiger earrings for a few teachers at school.
Started a cardigan with my school colors.
Met with my book club.
And finally…posted a substack!
Hopefuls for next week
I really hope that I am not as tired this coming week. I want to read more and crochet more too. Reviews, writing, journaling, and cleaning are also some hopes for this week.
What did you enjoy last week? What are your hopes for this week?
